Solutions

There are three main types of drone sensors capable of achieving high precision data for agriculture:

RGB

RGB sensors capture real-colour images which can be processed to create 3D models and orthophotos (map-like mosaic images). 
RGB sensors are capable of estimating biomass, and indices such as canopy-cover and leaf area index (LAI) which can be used to predict crop health.

Successive surveys allow for growth and health monitoring.

Solutions include the Phantom 4 RTK, which can produce high accuracy data thanks to its RTK module. 

The Matrice 300 RTK combined with the Zenmuse P1 provides even more accurate results and at higher resolution and time efficiency.

Multispectral

Multispectral sensors provide the most information out of the three sensors. They are similar to RGB sensors, however they capture data in more wavelengths, usually 5-10, rather than the usual 3 with RGB. This allows for more in depth analysis of the target, which is especially useful in agricultural applications. This allows for the creation of many crop health indices such as:
  • Chlorophyll content
  • Nitrogen content
  • Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)
  • Optimized Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (OSAVI)
  • Colour Infrared (CIR)
Put simply, these indices highlight the healthy and unhealthy areas of the crop field, allowing for informed decision making and growing regimes.

Multispectral solutions include the Phantom 4 Multispectral. This is similar to the Phantom 4 RTK, apart from the RGB sensor is switched for a multispectral sensor, with 5 spectral wavelength sensors in addition to an RGB sensor. The RTK module also makes the system capable of producing high accuracy results.

Another solution is the Matrice 300 RTK combined with the Micasense multisprectral sensor. This is a third-party payload that can use the RTK from the drone to deliver high accuracy results in 5 different wavelengths.

LiDAR

LiDAR is quite different to the other solutions. Rather than detecting light, it produces light, hundreds of thousands of pulses per second in fact, to detect the shape and features of the surveyed area. It is particularly useful for agriculture, as the pulses can penetrate through the crops and detect the earth beneath. This potentially should allow for a better estimate of indices such as biomass and predicted yield.

It also capable of working in low- or no-light conditions, unlike RGB or multispectral sensors.

Like with the other solutions, successive surveys allow for growth monitoring.

Drone LiDAR solutions are also capable of high accuracy by utilising the RTK from drones. The DJI Zenmuse L1 attached to the Matrice 300 RTK can achieve high accuracy results, although not as high as with the Phantom 4 RTK or Zenmuse P1. The LiAir V70 also works with the M300 producing similar results. Post-processing software allows for higher accuracy results, more similar to photogrammetry solutions.

For the highest accuracy results, you can use the Riegl-minVUX attached to the Matrice 600 Pro or M300. This can achieve 2 cm accuracy, similar to the P1.

ALTUM-PT

THE DOUBLE SPATIAL RESOLUTION OF THE PREVIOUS ALTUM
